Joy Lum, PhD, PC
LICENSED PSYCHOLOGIST
About Dr. Joy Lum
My background
I earned my B.A. from Pomona College. After teaching elementary school for seven years, I decided to become a psychologist and went to the University of California, Santa Barbara. After finishing my internship at The Ohio State University Counseling Center, I completed my PhD from UCSB in 1997.
I have been practicing as a licensed psychologist in Eugene, Oregon, since 1999 when licensed by the Oregon Board of Psychologist Examiners. From 1996 to 2013, I was a psychologist first at the University of Oregon's Counseling Center, and later at the 4J school district's Health Center. I began my private practice in 2005, a decision I have never regretted.

I am full-time in private practice for therapy, consultation and supervision. My psychodynamic training underscores the importance of forming secure relational attachments. I’m influenced by Dr. Diana Fosha’s Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), which emphasizes the transforming nature of deeply felt experiences, along with Dr. Eugene Gendlin's focusing approach, an approach that incorporates the felt sensing within each person to find their unique wise and good way. i truly appreciate the creative ways our minds and bodies work. And I love the good surprises that emerge that change us for the better! When I can, I like to play tennis, hike, read, garden, ponder the mysteries of the universe, and create art.
